I have been placed in some fortunate situations throughout my life and being asked to review Richard Bennett’s latest book, ‘Across Five Decades’ is now high in my memories of being involved with the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Some of my first memories in life are meeting Richard’s family selling his beautiful images of the race at Constitution Dock in Hobart after the race finish. I still cherish seeing the Bennett family each year when I finish the great race and having the chance to select a new image for what I call, “my hall of Hobarts”, which is in fact my personal presentation of Richard’s images.
Richard’s association with the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race spans ‘Across Five Decades’ and he has personally hand crafted this book to display his history with the race, including rare insights as to how his involvement started with the race in the 1970’s, various experiences he and his family have had with the race and viewing the magnificent images that Richard has printed on the finest quality paper to produce this extraordinary book. Reading the book is a memorable experience, firstly removing the book from its beautiful box with inlaid title, opening the first few pages with suspense and then admiring the unique method in which Richard has shared his experiences and images.
‘Across Five Decades’ proves that Richard is one of the finest photographers in Australia showing an eye for the ocean, coastline, yachts and finally the crews who sail to Hobart every year.
